This is a B+ strenuous walk with a long walk in and a steep ascent of the hill, but you will hopefully be rewarded with wonderfull views at the top. Starting from near the green well of Scotland, 1 km north of Carsphairn, we follow a rough path for about 2 km to reach the foot of the hill. As we begin our ascent the underfoot conditions will be quite boggy, this improves as we climb a little higher. The path becomes quite steep in places, but begins to level off nearer the summit where we have some rocky conditions to negotiate. Eventually we reach a large cairn and a trig point at the top. We take a different way down off the hill, eventually meeting up with the path we followed on the way up to the hill. From here we follow this path back to our start point. Walking poles and good boots are essential, gaiters recommended.
Parking for the walk is around 1km north of Carsphairn on the A713. Immediately after crossing a bridge over the water of Dee there is a right turn onto an old road with a small parking area below. Distance from Kilmarnock is 38 miles each way. £24 per car. From our meeting point take the A77 south to the Ayr bypass until you reach the A713 turning to Dalmellington. Follow the road to Dalmellington. Stay on the A713 for approx 7 miles to reach the start point.
