The third section of the Centenary Way starts from the pretty village of Welburn, from which we will head out through the fields towards the A64. After crossing this busy road to reach Crambeck the walk continues on quiet paths through woodland and along the York-Malton railway line towards Kirkham. On our way we will be passing the old Castle Howard station house and the ruins of Kirkham Priory with its imposing gatehouse.
We will then continue along a quiet road and through farmland until we reach the river Derwent, where we will stop for lunch. The second half of the walk is very flat and follows the river Derwent all the way to Malton.
🚌 The 81 bus runs from York (Station Avenue [stop RM] at 0900, Stonebow [stop SB] at 0908) and arrives in Welburn at 1000. At the other end of the walk, Malton is connected to York via regular train and bus services including the Coastliner.
🅿️ If you prefer to drive, on-street parking is available near the church and along the main street in Welburn but please park considerately to local residents. Bus 81 leaves Malton at 16:20 and arrives in Welburn at 16:37.
🚻 A public toilet is available at the village hall in Welburn (donations welcome)
🥪 Please bring a packed lunch, or allow enough time to buy something from the cafe at Welburn before we start the walk
🍰🍺 There are plenty of options for refreshments at the end of the walk in Malton
🐶 Dogs welcome but must be kept on a lead
⚠️ The path along the river can be muddy and overgrown, so good boots are recommended
