Overview

A circular walk starting at the Chew Valley Lake and moving westward into gentle hills with good views; we then turn eastwards above Chew Stoke and head to Chew Magna for lunch. We then head eastwards to the little known but impressive Stanton Drew prehistoric stone circles (an inspiration for John Wood the Elder when building the Circus in Bath…he was a bit odd!) before returning to Chew Magna and then following the River Chew back to the start. [There’s a Neolithic honesty box at the stone circle (£1 suggested on it) – participants can decide for themselves if they want to contribute].   Two stops – brief coffee stop and a packed lunch stop.

Chew Valley Lake North Car Park – a somewhat steep £4 per car all day but with car sharing this can be made reasonable. 23 miles (43 mins) from Trowbridge (using that as centre of West Wilts area, distance based on AA Route Planner). There’s a very good fish and chip restaurant and take away at the car part open until 4.30 if anyone fancies an early tea.
