09:50 from Frome Market Place, 10:10 ish from Mells church.
The walk will start from New Street (the cul de sac next to the Talbot Inn, leading to the church) and will go down the Wadbury valley following the Mells Stream/Mells River through moss covered woodland and past old iron works and lime kilns, and the de la Beche geological unconformity, to Hapsford, where the path goes through a delightful industrial estate! We then continue to follow the river past the Murtry aqueduct, which was supposed to carry the Dorset and Somerset canal across the Mells river. A short stretch on the A362 takes us to the gates of Orchardleigh and then we cross to Spring Gardens and return to Frome on the cycleway/riverside path alongside the River Frome.
Walkers who parked at Whatcombe Road can return to their cars as we pass by en route to the town centre and those who parked at North Parade can peel off before we go under the railway line for the final time and enter the Cattle Market car park.
There is a risk of slippery mud on paths if it has rained heavily in the week before. Three stiles, one high but slim people can shimmy through a gap to get past, two low and easy to step over. Several fallen trees to be scrambled over, under or round. Bring snack. Numerous eating places in Frome at end of walk if desired.
Numbers catching the bus from Frome will be capped at 20 due to bus capacity, so please text to book a place and indicate if you are starting from Frome or Mells.
