Enjoy a diverse day out amidst some of the South Downs’ most memorable scenery. We start from East Dean’s quirky Hikers Rest Café at 10:30 am. If you arrive earlier enjoy a quick tea/coffee at the cafe as there will be no tea break before lunch.
Along the South Downs Way coast path, expansive views open up over both the sea and the Downs, with stretches traversing four of the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs.
We pass the historic East Dean church with its iconic Tapsell gate, a feature of Sussex churches and designed to keep livestock out. This leads us to the picturesque National Trust coastal hamlet of Crowlink which has origins dating back to the 17th century. Once on the coast path we walk over the cliffs before descending to the beach at Cuckmere Haven. At Cuckmere Haven beach we will have a leisurely packed lunch on the beach and a swim for those who are inclined.
After lunch we head inland above the meandering Cuckmere River to West Dean and on to the idyllic village of Litlington where we can enjoy afternoon tea at Litlington Tea Gardens. After enjoying our tea we head back to East Dean via Friston Forest
Throughout, expect a range of landscapes—coastal cliff tops, wooded forest paths, open fields and historic, picturesque villages blended into a single circular walk that finishes back in East Dean.
There is free parking in the Village Hall car park. We will meet at Hikers Rest cafe which is a two minute walk from the car park.
Please contact the leader by 7pm on Monday 18th August (two days beforehand) if you would like to join us.
