Sunday 25th January: Elmley Castle. 9 miles, 10:00 am start time.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION: The first demanding climb out of the village and onto a muddy bridleway brings us to the iconic Banbury Stone on Bredon hill, a distinctive elephant–shaped limestone outcrop within an Iron Age hillfort. On a clear day there are splendid views towards Pershore and Worcester.
The route continues in a southerly direction along well defined tracks and woodland towards Kemerton and Overbury, two charming villages.
A strenuous climb alongside Overbury Wood eventually joins the Wychavon Way which we cross to begin a very muddy descent along a bridleway towards Fiddler’s Knap and through to the beautiful churchyard of St. Mary’s in Elmley Castle which is currently strewn with the first snowdrops of the year.
CONDITIONS: On the day of the recent recce, conditions underfoot were noticeably muddy on the first ascent and particularly so on the final descent, therefore stout walking boots and walking poles are strongly recommended.
