A moderate route of approximately 8.5 miles taking in some beautiful Durham countryside.
We commence the walk from the 7th century church at Escomb and head west towards Witton Park passing through the village of Paradise. We then follow the river path.
It is on the bend of the river where the path disappears and we need to negotiate through a 100meter boulder area. Safely, safely just here and we shall assist each other so there are no slips and sore bottoms! A further 15 minute walk along good footpaths and we are rewarded with the first glimpse of the magnificent Witton Castle. The footpaths in the castle park are all permissive and it is within the grounds that we shall have lunch. There is a cafe should anyone wish to use it, but recommend a packed lunch (as usual) as the view of the castle from our break area is quite impressive. From thereon we head along the PROW on the east side of the park towards Toft Hill. This will be a gradual slope - not too taxing and the views from the top are excellent. We then turn in a north easterly direction, zig zagging various paths through High and Low Etherley. Lots of livestock but all fenced in. Heading back to our start point we walk through a few fields of very friendly sheep and last of all a few cattle who were more interested in "Chewing the Cud" than us! The route overall has plenty of good condition stiles and we gave up counting after 20. The going will therefore be slow in places. There is of course the obligatory mud in various locations.
