A moderate walk of 4.5 mile, starting at the car park at Herrington country park. The route starts with a steady climb to Penshaw Monument, then a short but steep descent - walking poles might be advisable here. This is followed by a gentle descent through woodland. We then make our way to the River Wear before following a rather muddy riverside path to Cox Green. We then turn south until we reach the old Penshaw branch of the Leamside railway line, before reascending Penshaw Hill. This stage of the walk involves a steady, prolonged climb.
Some of the route is quite muddy and walking boots are advisable. There are two stiles on the route.
Refreshments are available at the end of the walk at Penshaw Farm Shop, where good coffee is served, as well as a variety of snacks.
Toilet facilities are available at the start of the walk at Herrington country park, and at Penshaw Farm Shop.
Directions: Heading east from Chester le Street, take the A183, Chester road towards Penshaw. Continue until reaching the roundabout approx 400 metres after you pass the Prospect Pub.
