Overview

This is an open, moderately challenging, small horseshoe hill walk, with lovely views, which starts along the beautiful Glensax valley and straddles Waddenshope Burn.  Starting from the Cademuir forest car park we enter the Glensax valley at Haystoun, then follow the track on past Upper Newby, taking a short sharp climb at the far side of a small plantation.  From here we have a steady southerly climb on good hill paths to Dead Side (a name apparently related to a palisaded settlement, field system) and along the ridge to the highest point at Scawd Law. Here we turn north to cross Preston Law, dropping down slightly before our final climb to the craggy top at Newby Kipps. The climb down from Newby Kipps is along a rough stony path to meet the Lady Blair Plantation, from where we follow the forest track down to Newby and retrace our steps along the track back to the car park.
