A very easy and short 4.5 mile midwinter walk from Irvine town centre following river paths and pavements. This is perfect for anyone new to walking in a group or building up their walking distance.
From the Townhouse, we'll head to the river, following the path past the old cemetery wall and St Innan's Well - St Innan being the patron saint of Irvine. Soon after, we pass the Powder House, which was thought to have been first built in 1642. Originally named 'Pouther' (Old Scots for powder) House, this is one of the few surviving in Scotland, used to store the saltpetre used in the manufacture of gunpowder.
Following the riverside path it meets the River Annick we'll reach Tarryholme Estate and the first small wildlife pond before crossing the road to the second pond. We now follow a circuit round the Riverside Lodge Hotel before crossing the river once more to make our way by pavement for the final half mile or so to the Townhouse.
Due to the distance there's no need to bring lunch but we could stop briefly at the main pond for a snack. Irvine has plenty of cafes if required post walk.
Being a local walk, car share may not be necessary but will be available from the usual Morrisons supermarket carpark.
Meeting at the Townhouse, High Street, KA12 0AL (attached to The Portal). If you turn down Kirkgate from High Street, free parking is available at Kirkgate carpark.
