This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
A mostly rural walk exploring the gentle rolling countryside east of Knebworth, with a chance of seeing sunset and moonrise.
From Knebworth railway station we’ll pass through the village and out between the East Coast Main Line railway and a wheatfield, heading south to Woolmer Green. Here we pick up a section of the Stevenage Outer Orbital Path (STOOP). On the edge of Woolmer Green we’ll see a curious outdoor gallery of hand-painted signs emblazoned with ‘Dad jokes’ which might make us smile or groan!
The STOOP then takes us through arable farmland and horse paddocks to the edge of Datchworth. After passing the little village church with its witch’s hat spire, we’ll leave the village (and the STOOP) along a quiet country lane, with wide views across the fields to our right.
We then walk gently downhill along a bridleway between open fields, looking towards Harwood Park and Stevenage. Paths lined with oak and other trees bring us to the edge of Stevenage; we’ll then dip briefly into the town, passing twice under the Hertford Loop railway line.
Returning through the fields to Knebworth, we might see the sun go down and moon come up (depending on our pace and the weather) before re-entering the village via its recreation ground. From here it’s just a few minutes’ walk back to our start point and the option of a post-walk drink at The Station pub.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, please click 'join waitlist' then please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

This is a circular walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
