Overview

Area Sunday Strenuous Walk.

Distances are over 10 miles.

Please note, this walk replaces the Area walk planned for 22 February 2026 that is shown in the printed programme. This has been changed because of the closure of Piccadilly station for part of February. A different walk for 22 February avoiding Piccadilly, Hebden Bridge to Todmorden, has now been arranged.

Meeting time & place: 

09:20 at Manchester Piccadilly station to catch the 09.31 to Marple.

Start time & place: 

10.00 at Marple station after the arrival of the train from Piccadilly, due at 09.52. The leader will join the party at Marple station.

Estimated finish time & place: 

16.00 at Marple station in time for the return train to Manchester, due at 16.08. The next return train is due at 18.10.

Distance: 

13 miles

Ascent: 

1762 ft

 

Note: walkers are advised to check one of the rail websites such as nationalrail or trainline close to the departure time in case of late changes to the running of the train.

Train ticket - Marple is within the Greater Manchester boundary so the best ticket will depend on concessions &/ other journeys made on the day.

Car parking available at Marple station.

Walk route - Marple station, Etherow Country Park (toilets available), Beacom Houses, Cown Edge, Botham's Hall, Chisworth, Coombes Edge, Robin Hood's Picking Rods, Ludworth Moor, Hollywood, Mill Brow, Marple Bridge, Marple station.
