This is a figure of eight walk of 6-miles or 11-miles, both starting and ending at the village of Minions. There is an option to finish after the first stage or to continue around Caradon Hill.
The route takes across the high moorland of Bodmin Moor, through a significant prehistoric landscape, impacted by later mining and quarrying. From the heights of Cornwall’s third peak (Kilmar Tor), into tranquil woodland and around the landmark of Caradon Hill following the old mining railway.
Starting at Cornwall's highest village, Minions, we will traverse neolithic stone circles (The Hurlers) and explore Rillaton Barrow and Gumb's Cave as we climb past the Cheesewring into the fortified settlement of Stowe's Pound with its outstanding views.
Next we cross the open moor to Kilmar Tor and have a possible meeting with a rock monster before passing through Bearah Quarry to lower levels. Walking further on quiet lanes and woodland to Phoenix Mine, we then take the old train track back to Minions.
At this point there is an option for those wanting a shorter walk (a little over 6 miles) to return to the car. For those still with strength in their legs we follow the old rail-bed down Gonamena Incline into the picturesque desolation of the Caradon Mining Valley, circle around the mast of Caradon Hill back to the cars.
Bring drinks and a packed lunch and wear stout walking boots. The weather on the moors can change quickly so pack clothing accordingly: bring Arctic gear and sun-cream!
Toilets in Minions Village for those in need.
Any dogs will need to stay on the lead due to sheep & cattle grazing on the open moor and the threat to ground nesting birds.
