The name of both the hamlet and the bridge, with the Swan Hotel nearby. At the south end of Windermere and just a short walk to the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway and its steam trains, the walks may well take you to up to Yew Barrow and Boretree Tarn, or even up to High Dam to the north.
There will be three walks availablewith details circulated on the coach. They will range from easy to strenuous depending on the walk selected.
A Walk Leader Janet Loines - A circular walk of just under 11 miles and 1838ft of ascent. After leaving Newby Bridge and passing through Stavelt-in-Cartmel we head up to the summit of Gummer's How, at 1089ft with views of the whole of Windermere and the fells beyond. Descending through Birch Fell Plantation, then lovely open countryside, allotments and tarns back to Newby Bridge.
B Walk Leader -Dave Eccles - 7.5 - 8 miles with 1350ft of ascent and a high point of 630ft. From Newby Bridge towards Backbarrow, then along the banks of the River Leven to reach Low Wood. A steep climb through Birk Dault Wood to Bigland Tarn for lunch. Then a gentle walk to Hard Crag. The next path, over Bigland Barrow to Hazelrigg was difficult to follow and boggy in places. From Haxelrigg we have two ways back. 1, along a country lane, and 2, over the ridge of Bigland Barrow, depending on the weather.
C Walk Leader - Derek Cook - Just 6 miles with 752ft of ascent. We start with a short but steep climb through Wintering Park to Finsthwaite. We continue north gradually gaining height to High Dam. Return to Finsthwaite and head for Great Knott Wood and Lakeside to join the footpath alongside the railway back to Newby Bridge.
