Enter the gate and walk up the steps halfway to Penshaw Monument, turn left along footpath, taking second stile on the right, footpath through field downhill to road. Walking along old railway line, once at overbridge take path to the left, cross bridge and follow the track onto path to the left, follow footpath across field and down through wood. Cross bridge over River Wear and continue to walk along the Heritage Way, taking us under the Victoria Viaduct. Cross footbridge. through Cox Green. Continue along riverside path, reaching a steep stepped path walking up to old wagonway path. Continue this path, turning left up towards Penshaw Wood, over stile into the wood and then gradual ascent to Penshaw Monument. Taking time to enjoy views and walk up onto the monument. Finally, a steady descent down the steps back to the cars on the lane.
Terrain: inclines – steps (1 long and steep) along several parts of the walk, steady and moderate, bridleways, well-trodden tracks, woodland tracks, small amount of road walking (quiet roads). Gates and stiles, no issue with height or repair. In summary a moderate varied walk, of approximately 7.5 miles enjoying lovely countryside, river views, and woodland of Penshaw, Offerton and Cox Green. Grade : moderate.
When pre-walked muddy in parts, and based on recent weather the same condition, gaiters, and poles if desired. The walk will be at a steady pace to accommodate the steps/ascents with short breaks at points to ensure the group stays socially together.
There will be a lunch stop halfway, on the banks the River Wear. At end of walk, there is a cafe near the monument at the Penshaw Farm shop.
And dependant on direction of travel for walkers, if heading North on the A1, there is an option to take the junction off to Lamesley and have refreshments at The Ravensworth Arms.
