Walk–a linear walk along a mix of paved foot/cycle paths and informal woodland trails following the course of the river upstream to the landmark Shot Tower at the entrance of the Crane Park Island nature reserve, which we will also explore. The pace will be extremely leisurely and the terrain mostly flat, but some paths are rough and muddy in places, with plenty of brambles, so dress accordingly! This walk is all about discovering nature; reaching a particular destination is not important as there are various en-route exit points with easy access to main roads with bus stops. Join the walk for one hour or three, but be sure to inform the leader if leaving early. Refreshments and public toilets are available en route at Kneller Gardens and at the Shot Tower, or participants may bring their own snacks and/or picnic lunch. Our leader is an inaturalist ambassador who will be delighted to assist with identification of plants, fungi, and wild creatures encountered along the way. Participants are encouraged to carry mobile phones loaded with the inaturalist app. They might also like to bring binoculars and magnifying glasses, although these are not essential. It is advisable to travel to the meeting point by rail or bus, as local parking opportunities may be limited. The leader will wear a cherry-pink crochet hat for easy recognition!
