Overview

Please note that the start point is different from that given in the trifold leaflet

The Schil is a fine hill, standing at 605 metres on the Pennine Way, directly east of The Cheviot. We climb from Sourhope Farm by a farm track to reach easy grassy tracks along Birnie Brae before a short, sharp climb to the rocky summit of The Schil. From there, we descend northward along the Pennine Way, leaving it to follow grassy paths and tracks which skirt east of The Curr and Blackdean Curr, before dropping back down to Sourhope Farm.

This is a hill-walk, which requires full hill-walking gear. There will be a lunch stop and drinks stops as required.

Refreshments can be found after the walk in Town Yetholm or Kirk Yetholm.

Access for most people will be along the B6401 through Morebattle. About a mile south of Town Yetholm, take a right turn down a minor road which heads towards Cocklawfoot at the far end of the Bowmont Valley. Stay on the road until a junction where the left fork is signposted for Sourhope and the right fork for Cocklawfoot. Take the Cocklawfoot fork, but do not cross the river. Very shortly after the junction, there is a flat area to the left at NT841198 where there is ample parking.
