Starting from the Silchester Roman Town car park, we'll head north on a bridleway before turning westwards into the woodland of 'Benyon's Inclosure'. We'll then emerge onto a road for a short way (with a grass verge) crossing Silchester Common. We then pick up the Brenda Parker Way through part of Pamber Forest. Latchmere Green is the next small hamlet from where we'll rejoin the Brenda Parker Way across fields and the lunch-stop. Looping back to Silchester, we'll explore the Church of St Mary the Virgin followed by a short detour to view and walk around the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. We'll then cross through the centre of Calleva Atrebatum via St James's Way (the English Camino) where information boards tell of the history of this interesting Roman walled settlement.
Meet for a 10:30 am start at the free Silchester Roman Town car park, just off Wall Lane, just north-east of Silchester and south of Mortimer West End.
Total ascent is 360 feet via a mix of bridleways, forest trails and a couple of quiet roads. As usual, please bring a packed lunch, drink and be prepared for the weather and possible muddy conditions.
