This walk to the top of Penchrise Pen is a good introduction to the quiet hill country south of Hawick. There is also some fascinating wartime history here, as the start of the walk goes through the former site of one of the largest military camps in Scotland home, at least temporarily to thousands of British, Polish and German servicemen and prisoners of war.
It is a circular walk returning through a lovely valley then along the old railway line back to the start.
Conditions in places are very boggy so boots, poles and waterproofs are recommended. 2 stops for coffee and lunch.
Directions:- Head south from Hawick on the B6399 towards Newcastleton. As the road crosses the Slitrig water, turn right at a roadside war memorial to pass underneath the Barns viaduct. Continue along the road until you cross a cattle grid. Park anywhere on the left after the grid. There is limited space for parking so car sharing would be advised if possible. As the parking area is so muddy, spaces are limited so I advise to meet at the large car park in Hawick opposite Chrysties at 09.30 for car share. Those that can car share from their home the Start and Finish is:- Road end at Barnes, near Stobs (NT 50385 09585) at 10.00am
Circular walk, grade B, moderate. Boots and poles are recommended.
