Todmorden is a market town in the Upper Calder Valley. Walk the canal or head for the hills. There are several National Trails nearby, including the Pennine Bridle Way, the Calderdale Way, and the Todmorden Centenary Way to mention just three. The Rochdale Canal offers easy walking, whilst the climb up to Stoodley Pike is more of a challenge, but rewarding, and well worth the effort.
There will be three walks available on the day, with details passed around the coach. They will range from easy to strenuous depending on the walk selected.
"A" Walk Leader - Derek Hulse - A linear walk of around 10 miles with a bit of up & down. Starting from the A646 at Cliviger we start with the climb up to the Singing Ringing Tree (steep in places). Then on to Deerplay Moor to Thieveley Pike (449mts.). Downhill to Green's Clough. On to Cock Hill Wood and Lower Moor. Ending at the Hare & Hounds pub, or in Todmorden.
"B" Walk Leader - Chris Grayson - 8.5 miles with some steep up and downs on good tracks and paths, quiet lanes and canal towpath. We head up Stansfield Road and climb steeply passing East Whirlow Farm and on to Windy Harbour. Then on the Todmorden to Lobb Mill. Towpath to Shaw Bridge and up to Lumbutts before joining the Calderdale Way back to Todmorden.
"C" Walk Leader - Debbie Baxter - 7.5 miles with a total ascent of 780ft and four stiles. Starting from the town centre we head to the coanal and walk along the towpath towards Littleborough. On leaving the canal we begin the moderate, but steady, ascent. Lunch is planned for at the top. Now mostly downhill we head towards Mankinholes before rejoining the canal for the walk back into Todmorden.
