Westwell is one of the many vineyards emerging on the south-west facing slopes of the North Downs. It lies just below the ancient Pilgrims Way route to Canterbury, close to the medieval village of Charing, near Ashford.
Leaving the winery, we start with a short climb to the North Downs Way and then climb further on woodland-edge tracks. Passing by the Kent Gliding Club, we hope to enjoy some quiet flight activity as we walk. Heading downhill, we take the Pilgrims Way above the vineyards towards Charing village, passing the Alderbed Meadow, a special landscape of wet grassland and alder woodland. We return to the winery via Pett Place, the former home of comedian Bob Mortimer.
This walk is mainly on good tracks, woodland paths and some minor roads, with the possibility of a few waterlogged fields in the latter part of the walk.
There is an option to shorten the walk to 5 miles by omitting the extension into Charing Village.
Non-members are welcome to join us for one of their three free 'taster' Ramblers walks.
With thanks to Ade from Medway Ramblers who inspired this route.
Dogs are welcome on short leads.
Nibble break part way through the walk - bring own refreshments.
After the walk: Wines, soft drinks, beers and a tutored tasting are available at Westwell Winery. Walkers can order toasted sandwiches and platters (cheese, charcuterie, vegetarian). There is no need to book food in advance; we will collect orders before the start of the walk.
