A circular walk from Wanlockhead that takes in the two highest points in the Lowther Hills. The route heads up East Mount Lowther, which provides 360-degree views, and then climbs up to Lowther Hill (725m) before heading out to Green Lowther (732m) along a long high-level ridge. We will return by the outward route and explore Wanlockhead before returning to the start point. A mixture of grassy hill paths, tracks and tarmacadam. Three steep sections for durations of 500m to 1000m.
Wanlockhead, which is Scotland's second highest village, is a former gold and lead mining centre situated near the head of the Mennock Pass and on the Southern Upland Way. The Wanlockhead Inn is the highest pub in Scotland. In fine weather the views from East Mount Lowther can extend from The Lake District to the Highlands.
