6 miles at an easy pace. A flat and comfortable walk along the secluded and hidden River Crane, a lesser known tributary of the Thames. Just a century ago this (now) peaceful river valley was the site of one of Europe's biggest gunpowder mills, and endless explosions that caused death and environmental destruction all around. These days all that remains is a massive shot tower and blasted ruins, but all around there is also a beautiful nature reserve, and since this is Bonfire Night I am doing this walk today.
After the walk we can walk on to Twickenham Station if we wish.
Food: a short stop only for this, near the tower where snacks are available, and there is a friendly cafe in Kneller Park near Whitton.
Travel: train from Waterloo 10.33, calling Clapham Junction 10.43, Putney 10.47 and arriving Whitton 11.00.
