Circular led by Nigel S (Mobile No: 07793 629809). Two lovely easy circular walks on either side of the Colne estuary, with mudflats, and salt marshes which are a haven for heron, redshank, lapwing, shelduck kestrels and barn owls. Wivenhoe, especially, is an attractive little town with lots of historical interest. The walks are.linked bv the Wivenhoe Fingringhoe and Rowhedge ferry, which is run by volunteers on most summer weekends for 3½ hours around high tide and costs £2 each way (cash – bring £4.00 in coins). High tide will be at 14:56 so the ferry will run between 12:45 and 16:15. As it can only take 10 people at a time and assuming there are 12-15 in the party, half will need to take the first ferry and have lunch near the Rowhedge pub with the other half lunching near the Wivenhoe pub whilst waiting for the ferry to return. Bring a picnic and use the pubs for drinks and toilets as there might not be enough time for a sit-down meal. If, after completing the Rowhedge circuit, the last ferry is missed by some or all of the party, there are buses from Rowhedge to Colchester Station. Map: E184, L168.
