Overview

This is a circular walk of 10.5 miles starting from St Marys Church Roecliffe we head out on a mixture of paths and farm access roads heading towards Burton Leonard . Passing through the village we link up with the Ripon Rowel path heading towards Bishop Monkton where we turn towards the River Ure following the Ripon Rowel path at the Masons Arms. Outside the village we turn off the Ripon Rowel path towards the river . We return along the riverbank path passing Westwick Lock before entering Roecliffe to the rear of the church.

The start of the walk is mostly flat before a short climb up to Burton Leonard. From Burton Leonard onwards the walk contains multiple stiles across field boundaries as we gently descend until we reach Bishop Monkton. The path outside Bishop Monkton down to the river has a number of fallen trees and there can be both mud and standing water on this section particularly if the weather has been wet recently. The riverbank path back to Roecliffe is uneven in places and contains multiple stiles and bridges to cross. Waterproof footwear is recommended and walking poles for anyone with balance issues
