Overview

Moderate 5 miles staring from the village of Shadforth. The walk commences at the PROW at the end of the village green and proceeds through fields along a quite muddy path. Turning north we follow Shadforth Beck and cross over two footbridges before a gentle ascent to Crime Rigg Ridge. Turning Westwards we then see some fine views of the Durham landscape. Heading west there is a short sharp ascent of about 100 meters and at the top there is further excellent views of the area. Following the path to Sherburn Hill we then join the recently opened Sherburn Way where one can catch sight of Durham Cathedral in the distance. Heading gently downhill in the direction of Running Waters there is yet another muddy patch before heading east back to Shadforth.

At the time of the recce conditions were probably at the worst with sporadic mud incessant although in many parts the paths are excellent for this time of year. A bright spell is however forecast at the beginning of the week and this should have a good drying impact along the route, albeit there is a possibility of some snow flurries on Wednesday. If you do have gaiters it is recommended that you use them. There are three stiles along the route which are all in good condition and not at all high.

Post Walk Coffee will be at the Farm House Kitchen, Pit House Lane, Leamside, just opposite the Three Horse Shoes Pub. For most, this is on the way back to CLS. The Farm House has a good selection of sandwiches and cakes etc.
