The walk leaves the Coach & Horses, passes through the village of Sutton Scotney, and after a section walking along a narrow path amongst trees and bushes, continues along quiet lanes past Hunton Manor. It is all fairly level. Crossing a little bridge over the Dever, where the river becomes a small lake, it arrives at Stoke Charity church, which John Betjeman described as "gemlike little church" and a "veritable treasure house of beautiful things”.
After a break at Stoke Charity church, it passes through fields and a small nature reserve and crosses the Dever again. There are then more country lanes, the little hamlet and church at Hunton, and the larger hamlet and church at Wonston. It finally crosses slightly undulating open downland before returning across fields to Sutton Scotney.
