We begin at the Walton Lodge Cottages bus stop on Matlock Road from where we walk up to the village of Holymoorside. We pass through the village and over the fields to Brookside (not the one of soap opera fame) before heading for Frith Hall. We go along Bagthorpe Lane to Wadshelf where we turn south to go through Hagg Wood and across Holy Moor to Harwood Road. Finally, we arrive, by a rather twisting route, passing through Corporation Wood, Stanedge Golf Course and Stone Edge Plantation, at the bus stop on Matlock Road, near to the junction with Darley Road to end the walk.
The route is mostly on good paths, across and beside fields and through woods, but there are several short sections which are fairly rough-going underfoot and overgrown. There are quite a few ups and downs, but no very steep climbs. Not many stiles, but some are awkward to climb over.
Catch the X17 from Sheffield Interchange (D4) at 9.00. Leader(s) will join the bus at the top of Howard Street. This bus starts in Barnsley and goes though Meadowhall, so it may be preferable for some walkers to catch the bus before the Interchange. Please consult the online timetable.
For car drivers, the starting and finishing points are not very convenient. There is a car park at Walton Wood on the Matlock Road, before Walton Lodge Cottages bus stop but parking there would then mean a walk of several minutes along Matlock road and at the end of the walk you would need to take a bus for just 2 or 3 stops and then a short walk to get back to the car park. It would probably be better to check the bus timetable for the X17 bus stops and park near one in either Sheffield or Chesterfield. Note that bustimes.org shows all the bus stops on this route, unlike the Stagecoach and Travel South Yorkshire sites which seem to show only fair stages.
