A varied walk beside Swinner Gill, Gunnerside Gill and the river Swale passing through the ruins of several lead mines. Most of the ascent is in the first part of the walk, the return path by the Swale is through meadows and on good paths. One short section of path above Gunnerside Gill is narrow and eroded in places.
Starting from Keld the walk follows the coast to coast route initially on a good track, then climbing above Swinner Gill to a bridge. Ascending through lead mining ruins a partially flagged path rises to meet a wide track. Following the track for a while the coast to coast then crosses open moorland on a narrow undulating trod, descending to the ruined peat store at Lownathwaite mine. The way now stays beside Gunnerside Gill passing more well preserved mining ruins. The remainder of the walk is through meadows and beside the Swale to Ivelet, Muker then one final climb to return to Keld.
