This is a lovely walk in Martindale, with extensive views of Ullswater, the fells and over to the sea and Criffel. It starts from Martindale Old Church, with a steep walk up Gowk Hill and a coffee stop on the way up.. After crossing a boggy plateau, it descends Fuesdale to reach the Howtown Hotel and the Lake. Lunch will be taken overlooking the lake before completing the rocky path around Hallin Fell. The walk from Sandwick does involve a bit of ascent before the descent back to Winter Cragg.
This is a moderate walk at a leisurely pace with no stiles.
The first section of the walk up Gowk Hill is quite steep, so this will be taken very slowly. The rest of the hill is more gradual, with a couple of rocky sections, that will offer seats for a coffee stop. The plateau at the top of Gowk Hill can be boggy but despite heavy rain before the recce, it was OK. The stepping stones across the beck were under water but it was easy to jump across.
The descent of Fuesdale is rocky in places as is the path around Hallin Fell.
