This beautiful village has a timeless charm all of its own, giving us immediate access to head north east on an excellent trail to Monsal Head, where a benched picnic stop for elevenses with toilets nearby is most convenient, while overlooking the majesty of Monsal Dale and the viaduct below. A northerly loop takes us to the equally charming village of Great Longstone where lunch can be taken on the benches and stone steps of the village green. Retracing our steps for a short distance we soon join the Monsal Trail in the general direction of Bakewell to the south east. An adjoining path at right angles to the Trail takes us on excellent terrain as we eventually descend south with delightful views of the town nestling in the valley below, before emerging at its western outskirts. A little pavement walking on the A6 running parallel to the River Wye takes us to Lumford Mill, from where an equally pleasing north westerly path leads us straight back to Ashford. This final stretch continues to run parallel to the River Wye below us on our right, as it flows through the small estate of Ashford Hall (1785), directly overlooking its picturesque weir and lake at the end of a really lovely walk.
