Overview

A walk on the Marlborough Downs south of Swindon. Starts at the Iron Age hill fort at Barbury Castle and then crosses to a second fort at Liddington Castle. Continues due south along a chalk scarp close to Upper Upham. Then west along the Sarsen Way back to Barbury.  This is a walk on open chalkland with good paths and a little minor road walking. There are two moderate climbs, each of 300-400 feet. A coffee stop at Liddington Castle and a lunch stop around Upper Upham.

Meet at Barbury Castle Country Park park (free parking) lies about three miles south-west of Chiseldon. From the M4 Junction 15 follow the A346 towards Marlborough and then turn west at the B4005 to Chiseldon. Then follow signs for Barbury Castle. If coming from Calne/Devizes go via Avebury and follow A4361 to Wroughton. Take B4005 east towards Chiseldon and follow signs for Barbury Castle. Barbury Castle Country Park is about 30 miles from Trowbridge – AA Route Planner gives a journey time of 56-58 minutes.
