A circular walk of 12.3 miles from the village hall, Burbage. Burbage is a village and a parish in Pewsey district, Wiltshire. The village stands near the Kennet and Avon canal and is near the Reading and Devizes railway, set in the picturesque neighbourhood of Savenake, some 6.5 mile South East of Marlborough.
On leaving Burbage the route passes through cultivated and open fields heading south to facilitate a crossing of the A338 road near Aughton Farm. En route, we will have forded the River Bourne, a grand name for the bourne, making its way to Brunton and Collingbourne Kingston.
After the rather flat fields of our journey so far, we begin to climb the chalk downlands, so characteristic of the region. A gain of some 200ft takes us to our coffee / tea break, hopefully with views opening up particularly to the south.
Following a sudden loss in height, we continue north regaining the height and progress along an undulating landscape before arriving at the village of Easton Royal. The village stands on or near the likely route of the Roman road between Mildenhall and Old Sarum. From the 13th century the village was on the Marlborough-Salisbury road, until the 17th century when the road took a more eastward course through Burbage. Easton Priory, begun in 1234, was built next to the road in order to aid travellers.
We continue north to gently brush with Wootton Rivers at the delightful Cuckoo's Knob before turning East to Westcourt and returning to Burbage.
There are 5 stiles to be negotiated and one, we pass over, but is a complete ruin. There is also the River Bourne to be forded and whilst there is no bridge, it is passable even when in spate as at the time of pre-walking. In general, the paths and tracks are in good condition but there will be sections that are either muddy or under water and will need to be negotiated. Most of the route is open to the elements and participants should be suitably equipped - poles and gaiters are a consideration.
The walk is limited to 24 people, please book online by 6pm Wednesday 15th April, using the link provided.
