This is a moderate walk of approximately 5.5 miles. There is a gradual climb at the beginning up Cavedale followed by easy terrain.
We begin by walking up the footpath to Speedwell Cavern and then taking care to cross the road walk along the footpath to Castleton. It’s a short walk through the village to the centre and then up Cavedale, a limestone gorge. Here the terrain is rocky underfoot so walking poles are useful if you use them. At the top we follow tracks which then become surfaced towards Mam Tor. Crossing a road we take footpaths past Windy Knoll to another road where we join another footpath to the Blue John Mine. The path from here leads around the hillside to Treak Cliff Cavern and then follows a lower path back to the start.
Please bring a snack and drink for a stop part way through. There are plenty of places in Castleton for lunch after the walk. There are also toilets.
