A very flat and varied walk which has been deliberately planned at this watery time of the year to be mainly on man made surfaces enabling us to avoid much early year mud. We start by walking along residential outskirts from Chichester railway station to the start of the Centurion Way, which is part of the dismantled Chichester to Midhurst railway which closed in 1991.Then, after a couple of miles or so we'll have a 15 minute break and then head over a field towards East Lavant, returning to Chichester via country lanes.
We will meet in the ticket hall at Chichester railway station. Car parking is immediately next to this in the Avenue de Chartres pay and display car park. Unless you are planning to have a mooch in Chichester after the walk finishes its £4.50 for 4 hours. Chichester is also well served by bus routes and the bus terminus is immediately opposite the railway station.
There are one or two places where we can't avoid the potential of mud and for that reason I'd recommend a walking pole. As already mentioned, bring a snack or a picnic as we will have one 15 minute break about half way through.
I've led this walk a number of times and we usually finish with refreshments at the Chichester Festival Theatre. We then make our own way home from there. We'll still stop for a coffee, but this time afterwards I'm going to return to the carpark via the North walls section of the city walls walk and the Bishop Palace Gardens. This has been accounted for in the published finish time.
There's a loo at the station but not along the way.
