From Selhurst Park Road car park the walk gets off to a great start with expansive views on a clear day south towards The English Channel from Littlehampton to Bognor Regis and beyond. We walk gradually downhill through wooded landscapes over 3.5 miles towards Halnaker diverting through a vineyard then climbing up the hill to Halnaker Windmill which was built for the Duke of Richmond as the feudal mill of the Goodwood Estate. It is thought to date from 1740s and was working until struck by lightning in 1905.
The ‘Tunnel of trees’ on the track leading to the windmill is part of Stane Street, a Roman road in use from 70 AD. Descending the path we follow a narrow footpath over varied terrain towards Eartham before making our ascent through forest and farmland and returning to our starting point.
