Leader: Sue
Distance: 11 miles.
A part of the walk is on uneven ground, so sensible shoes required. Dogs are welcome, if they are calm with livestock. On this walk there maybe sheep or cows residing in the fields.
This is a moderately strenuous walk with some steep gradients, which we will take at a steady pace.
We start from the White Horse at Chilgrove pub car park, where we have permission to park,. Please ignore the signs saying parking for patrons only.
We leave the car park and go along the road for approximately half a mile and the turn off into the woods of West Dean, where you may see some deer.
We continue through various parts of the woodland, until we come to a steady climb along the SDW to the top of the hill, where we will stop at the Devils Humps for a drink. We will then walk down to Hooksway, before coming back through the woods towards West Monkton.
Monkton Farm was designated by Historic England as a Scheduled Monument that was interpreted in 1979 as a deserted medieval village, but recent renovation work have determined this to be a surviving farm house built towards the end of the Tudor / Beginning of the Stuart period in the 1700’s.
From here we will make the return route, with some linear walking via the road back to the pub. This is a circular route, with a small amount of road walking.
