A part of the walk is on uneven ground, so sensible shoes required. Dogs are welcome, if they are calm with livestock. Dogs will need to be on a lead for the duration of the walk. Please bring poo bags. On this walk there maybe sheep or cows residing in the fields. Please note, if there is an alternative route to avoid livestock, we will consider this, but it may not always be possible.
We start from Boxgrove Village Hall and walk over the road to Boxgrove Priory, which was founded in the reign of Henry 1 around 1123 by Robert De Haia. A Saxon church had existed on the site before the Conquest. The Priory was founded for three Benedictine monks, and was dissolved in 1536.
We then walk through the church towards the open field that leads to a wooded pathway, where we will walk around the edge of the fields and through the vineyards, prior to crossing the road towards Halnalker Windmill.
Halnaker Windmill was first mentioned in 1540 as belonging to the manor of "Halfnaked". It was built for the Duke of Richmond as the feudal mill of the Goodwood Estate. Halnaker Windmill was working until struck by lightning in 1905, damaging the sails and windshaft. The derelict mill was restored in 1934 and further restored in 2004. The mill is now owned by West Sussex County Council.
Following our decent down, we will retrace our steps to the road and back towards the car park (thos going on to pub lunch and divert off at this point).
