Description:
A coach trip which must be booked in advance with Lynne Esson, 01792-845845. Booking details will have been sent out to members by email.
We will leave Swansea at 8:15 from the Brangwyn and cross to Caldey for a walk starting approximately 10:15 a.m.
Join Andrew for a trip by boat across the bay at Tenby to visit Caldey Island.
Steeped in history of early Church and monastic settlement, the island has also been home to Pirate John Paul Jones.
The area is more tranquil now with farming being one of the less violent activities of modern times!
The island is home to Sea Birds and to Seals who bask on the rocks. The neighbouring island of St. Margaret is a nature reserve for birds where visitors are not allowed.
On the southern shore is the Lighthouse with views on a good day to Worms Head in Gower.
To the north is woodland where Red Squirrels have been reintroduced so if we are quiet (and lucky), we may see one!
We’ll be dropped off in Tenby and walk through the town to the landing stage where we’ll catch the boat.
The 20-minute crossing to Caldey will bring us to the jetty from where it is about half a mile to the centre of island below the monastery.
Here there are toilets, a café, shop, museum and video interpretation of the island. Those not wanting to do the full walk may wish to explore here.
We’ll set off on a 2.5 mile walk around the island that will take us to a ruined priory and into open farmland. We’ll walk to where we can view St. Margaret’s Island then make our way to the Lighthouse.
We then return to the café area before passing under the monastery to an ancient church.
We will then walk for just under a mile through woodland, watching for Red Squirrels as we reach the northern cliffs with great views over Tenby and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.
Returning once more to the café area and toilets, we’ll make our way to the jetty via Calvary.
After returning to Tenby, there will be time to explore the town before we catch the coach back to Swansea at 5 p.m.
N.B. If on the day the weather prevents the crossing to the island, you will have the option to:
- Spend the day in Tenby or
- Do an extended ‘Weatherman Walking’ Tenby route of about 7 miles.
