Leaving Boxgrove car park we will walk around Tiinwood Winery Estate. On exiting, if the weather allows we can climb up the hill to Halnaker Windmill which was built for the Duke of Richmond as the feudal mill of the Goodwood Estate. It is thought to date from 1740s and was working until struck by lightning in 1905.
The ‘Tunnel of trees’ on the track leading to the windmill is part of Stane Street, a Roman road in use from 70 AD. Fine views can be seen from the hill on a clear day.
After descending the windmill our route follows north east towards Ides Common before turning east and upwards as we ascend a short but steep hill over grassland and heading towards Eartham. However, before reaching Eartham we will head generally south west over Long Down and descend into a wooded area known as Thicket Beeches and then zig zagging our way on level ground back to our starting point.
