Overview

Meet at 10.00 outside Thameside Brewery, Staines (2 Rivers carpark, £2 parking) for a linear (there and back) walk to visit Harmondsworth Great Barn via Staines Moor, River Colne, Stanwell Moor, Harmondsworth Moor (memorial to crashed Canadian bomber). Harmondsworth Great Barn (free entry): Early 15th century, largest timber-framed building in England regarded as an outstanding example of medieval carpentry. Used for agricultural purposes until the 1970s but fell into neglect after it was bought by property speculators in 2006. Since January 2012 in safe hands of English Heritage. Adjacent 12th Century St. Mary’s Church. This is a walk to the magnificent barn before 3rd runway is built(?). Picnic/pub lunch, Harmondsworth village.
