For this lovely walk we start in Batford Springs Nature Reserve. We walk alongside the river Lea for a while then climb up out of the valley to cross undulating countryside with excellent views before dropping down to Wheathampstead via Lamer wood. There is time for a break in Wheathampstead before heading back along a footpath that joins a disused railway track to Harpenden.
Points of interest along the way include - the boardwalk in Batford Springs, the beautiful Grade 1 listed Mackerye End House, the lovely Crinkle Crankle walled garden, the restored Wheathampstead station with its oak statue of George Bernard Shaw, a regular passenger.
The walk is mainly on made up paths but we do cross some fields and may be muddy in wet weather.
Public toilets and a fantastic bakery/cafe (seriously good cakes alert) available in Wheathampstead
