Join us to walk from Tewinbury Farm, a peaceful spot nestled by the River Mimram. From here we will follow footpaths eastwards to gentle Hertfordshire countryside, passing open fields and woodland edges as we make our way to Panshanger Park passing Marden Hill House.
Entering the park you'll soon encounter the Great Oak of Panshanger, believed to be the largest maiden oak in the UK and possibly over 500 years old. Next we will take in the remains of the Panshanger Orangerie, once part of the 19th-century estate designed by Humphrey Repton. Though only ruins remain, its arches and stonework give a strong sense of the park's past grandeur.
We will continue through landscaped parkland to the site of Panshanger House, once the home of the Cowper family. Though the house itself was demolished in the 1950s, its footprint remains visible.
We will then return via the lakes, an area teeming with birdlife and seasonal flowers, and walk back through meadows to Tewinbury Farm. Once back we can either take refreshments at Tewinbury Farm or just up the road is The Plume of Feathers in Tewin village or The White Horse at Burnham Green.
The walk should take approximately 3 hours and we will walk at a leisurely pace with breaks to appreciate the sights and to take in the countryside views. The route is mostly flat with some very gentle inclines. It is just over 7 miles. Some surfaces could be muddy after rain so sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended. There may be some slight overgrown footpaths with nettles and brambles.
