We will leave the square and walk down to the Chain Bridge, cross the bridge and go through Gattonside to pick up the Southern Upland Way. Continue to follow the SUW up on tracks and grassy paths until reach ‘the pile of stones ‘. Then follow the path past fallen trees towards Earlston. When we reach the road, turn right along the road for a short distance, then right again at the finger post for Gattonside. This takes us up through Sorrowlessfields Mains to Goat Brae, down the Brae into Gattonside, back across the bridge to the start.
There is some pavement / road walking at the start and end, with a short section on a minor road in the middle.
A variety of paths and tracks, grassy, stoney, muddy, wet, narrow. There are quite a few uphill stretches, we will take our time to admire the views of the Eildons, Blackhill, the Cheviots and the Lammermuirs.
There are many gates (I lost count) on this walk and a couple of stiles, sheep in one open field.
Circular walk, grade C+, leisurely. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
