This is a forest walk on mainly good solid paths and tracks, passing the Portuguese Fireplace, Whiskey Bridge and other delights. We will later emerge on Mogshade Hill with it's lovely open vistas across moorland. After crossing the shallow gravelly stream, we track up to Stonard Wood and Hart Hill. From there we descend on an interesting scenic path to Wick Wood.
We then make our way up to Acres Down with it's spectacular views as far as the Isle of Wight. This is wild Goshawk country and if you don't see any of them, you are almost certain to see a birder.
After that there is a gentle descent through marvellous beech woods to the Highland Water again. At this point there is usually a bit of claggyness to encounter but this is about the only place on a route which on the whole is pretty solid going.
After that we hit the main trail beside the river for the last few hundred yards to the car park.
This is a forest walk so no toilets or shops. The nearest pub is at Emery Down.
No stiles. Bring refreshments for a coffee stop.
