This walk is outside of our usual area but well worth the extra drive, especially if you’ve never visited Avebury before.
The walk will be a figure of 8, the first section about 6 miles and after lunch about 4 miles.
We will walk south from the National Trust car park, following the incipient River Kennet to view our first ancient feature - Silbury Hill. Crossing the A4 we climb up the hill to West Kennet Long Barrow to see if we can sense the spirits of our ancestors. The Sanctuary is next on our journey, not much to see, but still an important site. Back across the A4 we join the Ridgeway and pass more burial chambers and eventually enter the Avebury enclosure. Here there is an optional walk up the Avenue. We will have our lunch stop here - there is a cafe at the National Trust centre and a few small shops. If you wish you can leave the walk here and explore Avebury at your leisure, or continue through the village to complete a circular walk to Windmill Hill and back to the car park.
Bring refreshments for a coffee and lunch stop.
No booking required.
There is a car park charge of £8 for the day, but NT members are free.
Avebury Manor is temporarily closed following flooding earlier in the year.
