A circular ramble starting and finishing in Milngavie walking along the West Highland Way and the John Muir Way. Leaving Milngavie we follow the West Highland Way as far as Carbeth, we then divert to join the John Muir Way ascending towards Cuilt Brae overlooking Strathblane. From here it’s just an hour or so to the Visitor Centre in Mugdock Park for a lunch stop. Passing Murdock Loch and Mugdock Reservoir we return to the railway station in Milngavie where there are trains back to Glasgow at 06, and 36 minutes past the hour.
Look out for the Scholars Rocks, a connection with the Spanish Civil War and an abandoned zoo.
Most of the route is off road, some rocky parts hidden by fallen leaves, a few steep but short ascents, and the final 2.5 miles into Milngavie is on tarmac.
Expect mud, boots recommended.
Warm, waterproof clothing essential, boots, a picnic lunch, drinks and snacks.
The cafe at the Visitor Centre should be open, picnic tables for those not using the cafe.
