PLEASE NOTE – registrations open two weeks in advance of the walk (i.e. Tuesday 14th October). PLEASE DON’T contact the walk leader until then! Please also remember to include a mobile number when you sign up. (ALSO as a Tuesday walk is a bit of an experiment, it will only happen with a minimum of four walkers plus the leader.)
This is a 9 mile linear walk from Coatbridge Sunnyside Station to Drumgelloch Station. Although the website describes it as ‘both urban … and rural’, it is almost all pretty rural, off-road and surprisingly lovely – with woodlands, perhaps wildlife – and history if you want to find it. After about half a mile on streets, the first half of the route follows the Monkland Canal, first along its grassed-over underground section (all sorts of industrial remnants, some visible and some not) and then two or three miles with water still in it. The second half of the route follows the North Calder Water, sometimes beside it and sometimes in woodlands above. The walk ends at Drumgelloch from where trains run to Glasgow Queen Street every 30 minutes or so.
The walk is all on clear paths, most hard surface but if it’s been wet then some may be muddy. The first half is flat, the second half has a few small but steep ups and downs, some with steps. Please wear suitable boots.
There may be a working toilet on the train and we will pass a Tesco with customer toilets about a mile into the walk. Otherwise you might be able to hide in the woodland for any comfort breaks.
Walkers should carry an "in case of emergency" card with contact details.
