Does anyone want to join me for a twixtmas eight-mile linear walk from Greenfaulds Station to Cumbernauld Station?
From Greenfaulds we’ll walk for about one-and-a-half miles along the meandering Luggie Water – the Luggiebank Wood Wildlife Reserve webpage says “Visit in November and December and you might see trout jumping from the Luggie” – we can but hope. This is followed by about half a mile ascending on a faint path through long wet grass, unfortunately ending in a bit of probably illegal saggy barbed wire (see photo) which you’ll need to step over to get to a small road. We follow the road for a short distance before entering Palacerigg Country Park where we’ll walk a loop through woodland on a mix of flat surfaced tracks and smaller paths, taking in Fannyside Loch. After that we’ll walk through more woodland towards Cumbernauld, finishing with around half a mile on a walkway past houses to Cumbernauld station from where trains run to Glasgow Queen Street every 30 minutes.
The walk is all on paths, most hard surface but some smaller and probably wet and muddy. There are a few small ups and downs along the river followed by a gentle ascent towards the road. Palacerigg is mainly flat, but with a steepish descent to a road at the very end. Please wear waterproof, grippy boots.
There are toilets at Queen Street (50p), on the train (with luck) and at Palacerigg where there is also a volunteer-run very basic café (hot drinks, sweets, crisps) which MAY be open. There are seats nearby where we can have lunch – if the café’s open and the weather’s grim then we can probably buy ourselves an indoor seat with a hot drink. If anyone’s wanting to end the walk with a twixtmas drink then there’s nothing near Cumbernauld Station, but Wetherspoons Counting House in George Square is open until 1am …
Walkers should carry an "in case of emergency" card with contact details.
