This walk along the Border affords extensive and spectacular views of the Cheviot hills in both directions. From Halterburn, we follow the high Pennine Way then grassy tracks to Wideopen Head. We skirt round White Law to rejoin the Pennine Way, heading up Steer Rig then turning eastwards, to walk from Black Hag to Sauchieside. The route now descends to Trowupburn where we pick up the ascending track which will bring us back up to Wideopen Head. We retrace our route to Halterburn. There are 2 burns to cross but generally we walk on good tracks. As with any walk in this area, we might encounter livestock.
From Kirk Yetholm follow the finger post for the Pennine Way for almost 1 mile along the single track farm road (there are passing places). Directly in front of you at this point, is an area of mixed hard standing and muddy grass suitable for parking.
Refreshments are available at the end of the walk in the hotels in Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholm.
Notes for non-members.
Please register by email or text. Please give your name and your own mobile number. (We need this in case of any problems on the day of the walk, e.g. late cancellations or an alteration to the starting point or time.)
Please observe the registration deadline for the walk, and please register as early as possible, to give leaders time to message about any further details, e.g. parking, directions, and general advice.
If you haven't walked before with any Ramblers groups, we allow you to walk with us for a maximum of 3 walks, before you decide whether to join the Ramblers.
If you are new to us, please tell the walk leader what kind of walking you do, and are comfortable with. The leader knows the walk and will advise whether it is suitable for you, or if it is better for you to start with a leisurely walk, so that you can judge your fitness. We don't want you to be disappointed by your first walk.
In Case of Emergency: Members carry I.C.E. cards which identify the name and number of a person to be contacted in an emergency. Non-members should bring a similar record on paper, placed in an accessible part of their clothing or rucksack. We have never had such an incident, but we need to cover all eventualities.
